Our school is situated on Pearse Road in Sligo town. We are right beside the Garavogue River. The word Sligo or 'Sligeach' in Irish means 'Shelly Place'. This is because there was lots of shellfish found along the riverside. Sligo is sometimes called a city and sometimes called a town. Sligo town has a population of 18,473 (official 2006 census figures). It is the largest town in the north west of Ireland and the second largest in Connaught after Galway. Our Lady of Mercy Primary School, Sligo is the largest school in the North West also.
W.B. Yeats wrote many poems about Beautiful Sligo. He liked the county so much that he was buried in Drumcliffe right under Benbulben's head. Read the inscription here:
